I have a confession…I paid someone to do my laundry. No it wasn’t a family member and yes it cost a bit more than I thought (because of my own naivety), but MAN WAS IT WORTH IT! Ok here is how it all went down…
My wife had a schedule from H$%* working all day and then overnight to train in for a new show that she was doing (she is an actress). She and I usually tag team most things around the house, including dishes, laundry (when she gives me permission) and a few other things. For the most part, I am the food guy, responsible for making all meals for the entire family and she is the schedule person, responsible for all things related to family scheduling. Our roles work really well and we both like them. I love cooking and making food and my wife is irritated by food. She is a wonderful patient though and will eat ANYTHING I tell her to as long as it is good for her body. Cool chick for sure. As for me, I have a hard time coordinating with my own mother and in-laws about when to visit with them and when we are going to birthday parties and all that stuff, so it is much easier for me to say “talk to my wife” when someone asks me if we can do something. Sooner or later, whoever is asking gets trained and will start going directly to her, which is a VERY good thing.

This post though is about one of the items I mentioned above. Laundry. During a temporary crazy schedule she had, my wife was unable to do a few loads of laundry. When one member of the team is in essence “out of commission,” it definitely takes a toll on the cleanliness and efficiency of the house. One day as you are getting dressed you realize you have no clean socks…the next day you look in your underwear drawer after a nice shower and it is empty…luckily you can wear jeans up to six times before you need to wash them according to a few websites out there, but going commando on account that you have no clean underwear…come on dude, something has got to change. At this point, I took a deep breath, looked at the MOUNTAIN of clothes by my bedroom door and said, “I gotta do something about this.”
In the past, my wife and I had discussed whether we should consider paying someone to come and clean our house. We do not spend much money other than on really good, healthy food. We don’t shop for the latest clothes and we don’t buy random things at stores unless we need it. BUT perhaps if we spent money on something that might actually save us stress…something we COULD do ourselves, but just don’t have the time at the current state in our lives…perhaps it would be worth it. Enter the The Laundry Lady. After a quick google search here in Orlando, I found her. Her website is simple www.shelovestodolaundry.com. Her website is simple and almost looks a little shady, but I had a good feeling about this one. I emailed a few questions to inquire and got a professional, polite and courteous response back in less than five minutes. Needless to say, I was hooked. Her service costs $2.50 per pound of laundry and we had 40 LBS! Freaking 40 LBS of clothes! There is no way we would have been able to wash, dry and fold all of that in the next few weeks, so I did what I thought was best and she picked up the laundry in two large bags left on my front doorstep that night and off they went.
The clothes are brought to one of her “washer’s” houses where they washed the clothes in specially requested dye-free, perfume-free natural detergent (due to a few skin allergies in my fam). She didn’t even flinch when I asked about that. The clothes were picked up on a Tuesday night and were back to me in individually wrapped and sorted white paper on Thursday morning. Each little pair of Power Ranger underwear was perfectly folded. Each little pair of pants or little pink socks were stacked with the closest of care. It’s like she LOVES to wash clothes. I was super happy to put all of our clothes back where they belonged without having to wash, dry or fold any of it.
It wasn’t until after I had put it all away on that Thursday and received an email from the Laundry Lady following up on her service that I realized this woman was really special. Not only did she ask me how she did, but she asked for feedback, for which I had nothing but glowing reviews. I asked her what I could do to help her with a positive review and she said if I would simply mention it verbally to someone I knew that it would be more than enough for her. She is humble, human, positive and extremely passionate about what she does. Her services are used mostly by busy, Orlando-based travelers who roam the country on business not wanting to use the hotel to wash their clothes, but for our busy family on this especially busy week, she saved our butts! The service cost us $100 and it was worth every penny. I am not saying I am going to do this every week, but when times get tough and schedule is crazy and clothes get out of hand, I think we could all use a little help every now and then…and that’s OK!
So that is why I am posting this blog. To recognize someone who loves their job and life all at the same time. Way to go Laundry Lady! IronDAD gives you two washed, dried and perfectly folded pant-legs way up!
