In our family, we take iPad time pretty seriously. We try to limit the amount of screen time (television, iPad, video games, etc.), but once I came across Captain McFinn’s Swim and Play App, I was willing to let my rules slide a bit. My friends over at Captain McFinn’s asked us if we would let my son, Roger, take a stab at playing the app and see what he thought. As a parent, I did my research first. Before downloading the app, I went to the Captain McFinn’s website to find a company that truly cared about the content that they were producing for preschool age children. Below is a quick video that really impressed me. As you will see, the company focuses on social and emotional development of our little ones, which I thought was really great. Take a look:

After selecting his fish, Roger was off to swim in the big sea. He was able to select the color of his fish and even give him a name, which he aptly chose “fishy” the fish. The goal in the various worlds that your child will explore is to teach them:

  • how to share and be polite
  • how to play as a group
  • how to be thankful
  • how to respect others

While Roger really enjoyed swimming around with “fishy” as he mentioned in the video, his favorite part was the musical aspect. He is extremely musical and loves beats and sounds, so he spent a lot of time with the singing eels and the musical instruments when he came across them.

The latest version of the app, which was recently released, includes an opportunity to explore San Dusty Reef, Riff Raff Reef and The Unsmashable Cross Section. Each world is set to teach a different lesson, with some of them even focusing on one of the biggest problems in the school system today, bullying. Another section focuses on how to use proper manners when in certain social situations. While today’s school system focus is primarily on math and spelling for our little ones, this app focuses more on the often overlooked emotional and social behaviors of our children to help them develop skills they can use as they grow older.

Happy downloading!

As your child explores the world below, they will encounter “hot spots” that serve as hubs for animation with interactive McFinn characters and cartoons, music videos and songs for preschoolers and eight different activities that focus on drawing, creating music and reading.

The more your little person explores, the more completion badges they will earn. All activities take place in the uniquely magical underwater world to create a live, interactive experience that will engage and inspire your children.
