What You Will Learn From This Week’s Podcast:

This week’s podcast talks about something that not everyone is comfortable talking about, but effects more families in the United States than you could ever imagine. This disease impacts of 700,000 American lives each year and is most common between the ages of 15-35 although it is definitely not biased to older folks. Although once the disease rears its ugly head, it is with you for life, there are several ways to increase your quality of life while living with it and possibly eradicate any and all symptoms for good. Now before you listen to this post, I have to tell you that if you are looking at making significant changes in your life and the way you eat or supplements you might take, it is always best to work with or consult your doctor to make sure that the changes you are making are right for you. Everyone is different and making changes at the right time is almost as important as making changes period. Thank you for listening and thank you for sharing with anyone you know that is living with any bowel-related illness.

DISCLAIMER: We are not professionals or doctors, we don’t have any medical degrees and are not certified in anything nutrition-based. But we have read A LOT of books and done a TON of research and have had amazing results. Please consult your medical professional before attempting to change your diet or make drastic changes to your lifestyle.

Five Steps You Can Take to Increase Your Quality of Life:

Step 1: See a GI Doctor – Your normal general practitioner is not the one to talk to you about your bowels. Make sure you find yourself a great GI (gastrointestinal) doctor. If you need resources, visit www.ccfa.org to find a doctor in your area.

Step 2: Make A Plan – Once you meet with your doctor and are possibly put on medication, come up with a plan to get you off of it. How long do you have to take your medication and at what dosage? Is there a plan to get you off the medication eventually?

Step 3: Take Responsibility For Your Disease – No one can help you make good choices for your food other than you! Don’t be too hard on yourself, but set limits. It’s time for you to stop the pain and suffering and make a few adjustments in your life that will improve your quality of living.

Step 4: Try Juicing – Many Crohn’s or Colitis patients say that fresh fruits or vegetables are too hard on their stomachs and bowels. This might occur for two reasons. The first is that your body might not be used to eating them and they are full of fiber, which brings me to number two (no pun intended). Try juicing. Fresh vegetable juice will enable your body to absorb all of the vital micronutrients your body needs, but will also save you from ingesting so much fiber, which might cause you use the restroom.

Step 5: Be Active – In your community and with your body. Get out there and volunteer somewhere. Workout either by yourself or with a buddy. Try a small race or 5K for a cause you believe in or support. Maybe one for the CCFA?
